That turns into a trip hop beat in the pre-chorus, embellished with jagging electronic sounds. “13 Beaches” spends a good thirty seconds submerging itself in the classy and lush strings, before giving way for the grounded sound of the piano. While the album still maintains Del Rey’s old school vibe, a large portion of it sounds decidedly modern with more recognizable trip hop beats compared to her previous records. The production on the track is a highlight from the album, and Del Rey once again intrigues the audience with her penchant for American pop culture references, but the final product seems hollow. ![]() Whereas his verse on Beyoncé’s “6 Inch” was rather redundant, this time around he sounds particularly weak. Even The Weeknd himself admitted that Del Rey is “the girl in my music, and I am the guy in her music,” but on this track, they sound like they are flirting with the idea of them together, rather than truly lusting for it. ![]() However, even though the pair seems to be a match made in heaven, their chemistry leaves much to be desired. The title track further explores the new world “Love” creates, with Elizabeth and Abel professing their will to live, contrasting the dark tone found in the previous works of both singers. Similarly, the album, both musically and lyrically, sees the singer dipping out of the 50s - 60s era on to which she has been clinging. ![]() “It’s enough to be young and in love.” The lead single off of Lust for Life depicts that hopeful moment when you have decided to move on from the past and look forward to a better future. ![]() She turns that world around on “Love,” cooing softly about the chronic parts of her life before assuring that there’s nothing to worry about. Even her best song and probably also the brightest, “Video Games,” one about appreciating small happiness in life, is doom-filled: “heaven is a place on Earth with you,” she croons, but the boyfriend figure is portrayed as aloof and ignorant. She sings about illusory lifestyles, deadly love, and escapism. The world of Lana Del Rey has been one of desperation.
